Frequently asked questions
How large a GIF or video can I use?+
There's no hard limit imposed by the tool itself — everything is bounded only by your browser's available memory. Very large GIFs (many frames or a large canvas) or long videos will simply take longer to process locally.
Why does Create GIF only sample the first few seconds of my video?+
Video-to-GIF is capped to a short clip length (adjustable up to 15 seconds) and a maximum frame count by design — animated GIFs get large fast, and this keeps encoding time and output file size reasonable. For longer clips, trim the source video first.
Why do my images need to be similar sizes when creating a GIF?+
They don't — mismatched image sizes are automatically centered and letterboxed onto a shared canvas sized to your largest image, so nothing gets stretched or distorted, though a very wide mix of aspect ratios will show visible white borders on some frames.
Does compressing a GIF lose quality?+
Yes, by design — scaling down resolution, reducing the color count, and/or dropping frames are all lossy operations, which is how the file size comes down. The Colors and Scale sliders let you choose how aggressive that trade-off is.
What does 'keep every 2nd/3rd frame' do to the animation speed?+
Dropped frames have their display time added to the frame kept just before them, so the overall playback duration stays close to the original — you get a choppier but similarly-paced animation, at a meaningfully smaller file size.
Can I extract frames from an animated WebP or APNG instead of a GIF?+
Frame extraction currently supports the GIF format specifically, since it relies on parsing the GIF container format directly. Other animated formats aren't supported by this tool yet.
